Astrophotographer Alyn Wallace describes the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM lens as potentially one of the best lenses ever made for landscape astrophotography, which really is quite a statement.
In his first impressions review he heads to Elan Valley in Wales (a place I’m very keen to visit myself) to put the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM through its paces and also compares it with the Samyang 24mm F1.4 which costs around $800 less. Is the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM really worth the premium?
There is some early wind noise in the video when he’s outside, but this is gone by 1:20 when he moves indoors to look more closely at the images. It’s definitely worth watching to the end if you are interested in this lens for astro.
The Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM delivers excellent sharpness across the frame but does vignette in the corners, a trait inherent to many fast and wide lenses. Coma appears to be well controlled and when stepped down to f/2.8 vignetting decreased and corner aberrations also improved.
Overall, the lens performed a lot better than the Samyang 24mm F1.4 when shooting wide open. The Samyang does improves when stopped down to f/2.8, but the corners are still not as well controlled as the Sony.
As well as his YouTube Channel you can also follow Alyn on Instagram and Facebook, or checkout his website for workshops (currently sold out) or his Astro Lightroom Presets.
