Sony a6600 Overview
The Sony a6600 was announced on August 28 2019 and is effectively the replacement for the Sony a6500.
Here are some of the features that the Sony a6600 and a6500 share in common:
- 24.2MP Exmor CMOS APS-C sensor
- 425 phase detection points
- 11fps maximum burst speed
- 5-axis stabilization with 5 stops of compensation (CIPA)
- 4K up to 30p and 100Mbps
- Picture Profiles including S-Log2 and S-Log3
- 2.36M dot viewfinder (0.7x, up to 120Hz)
- Single SD card slot (UHS-I)
- Magnesium alloy body, dust and moisture protection
And here are some of the additional features that the a6600 brings:
- Larger grip
- Longer life NP-FZ100 battery
- 180˚flip-up LCD screen for selfies
- 425 contrast detection points
- Faster focus acquisition
- Real-time Eye AF for humans and animals
- Eye AF for movies
- Still images ISO 100-32000 (extended ISO 50 to ISO 102400)
- No 30 minute record limit
However, despite this list of additional features Sony has also removed a couple of very useful features from the a6600.
First of all there is no longer a pop-up flash like is found on the a6500, so you will need to make use of an external flash instead.
The image buffer has also shrank on the a6600 and it can only shoot 115 JPGs (Fine) or 46 RAW files at 11fps before hitting the buffer, this compares to 269 JPGs (Fine) or 107 RAW files with the a6500.

The Sony a6600 has an industry-leading autofocus system, is capable of excellent images and video, comes with very useful in-body image stabilization and has the best battery life of any mirrorless camera on the market at this time. However, its sensor is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth, and competitors have caught up or surpassed it regarding video quality and features, resolution and handling. But for family photography and even some sports and action, it’s easily worth your consideration.

I used to own the a6500 myself and it was a fantastic APS-C sized camera. However, I replaced it with the Sony a6400 which despite the lower series number is actually the newer camera that packs more features.
When the a6600 came out I couldn’t see any real benefit to upgrading my a6400 other than the in-body stabilization and larger battery.
There is still a substantial price difference between the a6400 and the a6600 which is very hard to justify.
If I was choosing between the a6400 and a6600 today I would still go with the a6400 unless I had money to burn.
