The lens features six ‘Extreme Dynamic (XD) linear motors,’. Two of these motors drive the focus and four power the zoom.
There’s both a zoom ring and control lever for zooming, the zoom speed can be controlled depending on how far you move the lever in either direction.
As well as the power zoom rocker switch there’s also a physical zoom and focus ring, as well as an aperture ring which can be ‘de-clicked’.
On compatible cameras, such as the FX3, the ’T/W’ lever around the shutter button can be used to zoom in and out. You can also independently set the zoom speeds for standby and shooting modes.
Sony says that they have minimized focus breathing and compatible cameras this can be reduced further with the breathing compensation function. Currently only the Sony a7 IV and FX6 support this feature.
The lens is constructed of 13 elements in 12 groups, including two advanced aspherical elements, one extra-low dispersion (ED) element, one aspherical element, one Super ED element and one ED aspherical element.
There’s a seven-blade aperture diaphragm, a minimum focusing distance of 28cm (11″) at 16mm and 24cm (9.5″) at 35mm, a dust- and moisture-resistant design and a fluorine front element coating to repel water, oil and other contaminants.
The lens measures 80.5mm (3.2”) in diameter by 88.1mm (3.8”) long and weighs 353g (12.5oz).
The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G will cost $1,198.00 in the US, £1,299.00 in the UK and €1,500.00 in Europe. First shipments will start in May 2022 for Europe and June for the US.
