Sony A7III Overview
The Sony a7III was announced on February 27 2018 and created quite a stir with dual card memory slots and a range of other features that no other camera was offering for under two thousand dollars at the time.
Here are the new features that the a7III gains over its predecessor the Sony a7II:
- Back-illuminated 24.2MP full-frame sensor
- Base ISO range of 100 to 51200 ISO and extended 50 to 204800 ISO
- 5.0 stop in-body stabilization
- 693 phase detection points and 425 contrast detection points
- Eye AF now works in AF-S, AF-C and a firmware update added animal eye AF
- Electronic shutter option for silent shooting
- 10 frames per second for continuous shooting
- 4K video with no sensor crop in 24/25fps
- New NP-FZ100 battery doubles the battery life
- Touchscreen for moving the focus point
- Improved body design and joystick
- Dual SD card slots (only one supports UHS-II)

The Sony a7 III is a well-priced, well-rounded camera suitable for all kinds of photography. Twenty-four megapixels of resolution is more than sufficient for most tasks, and the 693-point autofocus system and 10 frames-per-second burst speed help the a7 III keep up with fast action. Video quality and feature set is another strong point, though some operational lag, a slightly low-resolution viewfinder and unintuitive video autofocus may turn off some users.

I own the Sony a7III myself and it’s hard to argue that this is an unbelievable full-frame camera at this price point.
I’ve used my a7III for shooting portraits or my dog frank, my son Josh, landscapes, macro, aviation and wildlife including birds in flight where is really excels.
The only thing that I find frustrating is that only one of the memory card ports supports the faster UHS-II SD cards, for the other slot you are limited to the slower UHS-I SD cards. This can become frustrating if you are shooting a lot of continuous bursts and recording to both slots simultaneously, as then you are restricted to the speed of the slower slot.
Hopefully the upcoming Sony a7 IV will address the memory card issue and then this camera will be even harder to beat in this price category.

The Sony a7III was announced on February 27 2018 and released for shipment in March 2018 in Europe and April 2018 in the United States.
UHS-I and UHS-II SD cards are supported in slot 1. Slot 2 only supports UHS-I SD cards, although you can still use UHS-II cards in slot 2 but you won’t get the speed benefits. See my a7III Memory Card Guide for speed tests and recommendations.
The Sony a7 III uses the Sony NP-FZ100 rechargeable battery.
No. The a7III does not include a battery charger but you can charge the battery in-camera via the supplied USB cable and AC Adaptor AC-UUE12. The official external charger is the Sony BC-QZ1.
Yes. The Sony a7III is a full-frame 35-mm camera.
Sony claim that the a7III is dust and moisture resistant, they don’t claim that it is fully waterproof and you should therefore use a rain cover if using the camera in wet weather or very dusty environments.
