Sony a7R II Overview
The Sony a7R II was announced on June 11th, 2015 and was the first full-frame Sony Alpha camera that I purchased.
At the time I was most interested in shooting landscapes so the 42MP sensor was appealing as I knew I’d be able to print poster size prints without any loss in quality.
Here are some of the things that the a7R II shares in common with its predecessor the Sony a7R:
- NP-FW50 battery
- XGA OLED viewfinder with 2,359,296 dots
- Normal ISO range of 100-25600
- 25 contrast detection points
And here are the new features that the a7R II gains:
- 42.4 megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor
- ISO 100-25600 range (50-102400 extended)
- 5 fps continuous shooting
- 399-point phase-detection points
- 5.0-stop (CIPA rated) 5-axis image stabilization
- Internal 4K recording from full sensor width or ‘Super’ 35 crop
- Picture Profile (inc S-Log2)
- Electronic first curtain shutter
DPReview awarded this camera their Gold Award and concluded their in-depth review with the following:
The a7R II brings 42MP stills and 4K video to a small, lightweight body. Electronic shutter and in-body image stabilization make for high quality images and video you’ll work harder to get, if you get it at all, from comparable DSLRs. BSI-CMOS gives the a7R II class-leading low light performance and respectable dynamic range. The a7R II also introduces disruptive on-sensor phase detection AF, with the widest coverage of any full-frame camera, precise focus on eyes, professional AF results in video, and the ability to focus non-native lenses.
DPReview
Although I no longer own my Sony a7R II I was certainly more than happy with the thousands of photos that I captured with it.
With the price of the a7R II now tumbling I’d definitely still recommend this camera if you enjoy shooting landscapes or still photography and are looking for a bargain.
If you are shooting more action then the autofocus system in the newer models like the a7R III and a7R IV will net you more keepers than the a7R II.
