Sony A7 IV Overview
The Sony a7 IV was announced on October 21st, 2021 which was just a little over 3 years and 8 months after Sony unveiled the Sony a7III which they themselves described as “the basic model”.
With a new 33 megapixel sensor the a7 IV gains an extra 9 megapixels over its predecessor along with a host of new features.
Here are some of the things that the a7 IV shares in common with the a7III:
- NP-FZ100 battery
- ISO 100-32000, Expanded ISO 50 to ISO 204800
- Max 10 FPS (Frames Per Second)
- 1/8000 to 30 sec shutter speed
And here are the new key features that the a7 IV gains:
- 33MP full-frame Exmor R™ back-illuminated CMOS sensor
- 8x more powerful, next generation BIONZ XR™ image processing engine
- Up to 4K 60p (APS-C) 10-bit 4:2:2 w/full pixel readout in all rec. formats
- 7K oversampling full-frame 4K 30p 10-bit 4:2:2 w/ no pixel binning
- Real-time Eye-AF for humans, animals, birds for photo and movie
- S-Cinetone, S-Log3, HLG and 10 Creative Look presets in-camera
- Advanced movie features; Focus Map, Breathing Comp., AF Assist
- UVC/UAC live streaming up to 4K 15p/1080 60p w/ internal recording

The a7 IV is an all-round capable camera, supporting the photographer in almost any situation. Its video capabilities live up to a similar standard, making it a hugely flexible imaging tool. Its extreme levels of customization can be daunting but its powerful autofocus system means it can be a very simple camera to use.

The Sony a7 IV was announced on October 21st, 2021 with first shipments beginning in December 2021.
The Sony a7 IV supports both full-frame (FE) and APS-C E-mount lenses. For a complete list of supported lenses please visit my Sony E-Mount Lenses Guide.
The a7 IV has two memory card slots. Slot 1 supports CFexpress Type-A and also SDHC/SDXC UHS-II/I memory cards. Slot 2 only supports SDHC/SDXC UHS-II/I memory cards.
Sony NP-FZ100 battery.
Yes. The Sony a7 IV is a full-frame 35-mm camera.
Sony only claim that the a7 IV is dust and moisture resistant, they don’t claim that it is fully waterproof and you should therefore take care if using the a7 IV in wet weather.
