I shot a girls' soccer match this afternoon. It was nice to have plenty of light so I used my Sony 100-400 and the 1.4x TC on some shots.

Shots from another match that I took this afternoon. They won 6-0 in a playoff match. This time I shot RAW and processed using DxO 3 and Lightroom.

Due to the threat of storms, they moved a playoff game to 11am. It made for good shooting conditions with overcast skies so that the light was more diffused. These shots were shot in RAW and processed with DxO3 and Lightroom. The last shot is an example of where the 60 megapixels came in handy since I shot it from the opposite side of the pitch and had to crop very heavily since I had switched from the 100-400 to my 70-200 (and without the 1.4x TC.)

The series of playoff photos continues. The team was scheduled to play the #2 team in the state in a semi-final match on Tuesday on their field. Lightning was spotted just before game time delaying the start. The 6pm original time was delayed several times and finally the decision was made to reschedule at 8:10 since a new storm cell had popped up. It was a good decision given that a few minutes later when I got in my car and pulled out of the lot the rain came in heavy. The weather on Wednesday was beautiful and the game started on time. The home team totally dominated the first half and led 1-0. Our team tied it with about 15 minutes left to play and it looked like overtime was a strong possibility. Our team scored again in the final six minutes and held on for the upset. They will play for a State Championship Saturday and I have been given permission to shoot it as well.

The referee finally signals time has expired about 10 minutes later and the celebration began. This shot shows the emotion of both teams.

Nice action shots, well captured.

Thank you. I'm really liking the a7RV for sports. I still need to figure out how to lock onto a particular face since I have had times where it would switch to a player behind or in front of the one I was tracking. I set it to use RAW compressed to get the full 10 FPS burst speed. I know that the A1 or A9 are touted as better for sports with the higher FPS but having come from using the Pentax using 4.5 fps or the K3 at 7 fps the 10 fps has been fine for me.

I honestly think 10 is fine anyway. I have the RiV and that's what I use. I am sure that the a9 etc will grab a few extra choice poses at 20fps, but as the RV has an updated AF, I don't think you are really losing out there. I can't justify the upgrade until I fully retire, unless something really takes my fancy, but I do fine on what I have anyway. I was a Pentax guy too, I went from there to a Nikon shooting 8fps, even that was better.

Agree 100%. I sold all my Pentax gear when I decided to move to mirrorless after I retired from teaching. I managed the school webpage so I shot a variety of events including sports, band, choir, plays, etc. I still shoot some for the school, mainly because I taught many of the current seniors and a couple of the teams have had really special seasons. Wednesday night the local newspaper did send a staff photographer (shooting Nikon) and we talked some. He mentioned that one of the best pieces of advice he had gotten when starting out was to shoot short bursts and not overshoot or it would be harder to meet the deadlines. The saying "It's not the bow but the archer" comes to mind when talking about a camera being appropriate for sports. Learning to anticipate where the action is likely to occur can help get a shot regardless of equipment.
