I'd like to hear ethical opinions about this photograph I posted. I also posted this on a local photographical groups facebook page that I'm a member of and a woman posted the comment, 'It's creepy! Especially taking pictures of women or children.' I posted a reply stating that the subject is exercising in a public space and so I have every right to take a photograph of her and post the image. It's not an offensive image, the person is not in a compromising position, etc. I don't see an ethical issue here. The woman's complaint has not had any support while my image and response has been 'liked'. If it's considered creepy taking pictures of women and children in public spaces, that is effectively the end of street photography, and a lot more besides. Any thoughts?

It amazes me when there are 3000 mobile phones on the beach and these bats think the only pervert on the beach is the guy with an obvious camera.

There are laws about photography in public places. Each jurisdiction has its own laws. Where I live, anyone in public is fair game, provided you’re not upskirting or taking images where privacy can be expected…. At our beach, with what people are wearing, (or not wearing) there’s a fine line. At the next beach over there’s a different local government who make photography on the beach a breach of its by-laws.

So, know your laws, then, you can publish the heck out of the image for commercial purposes if the subject signs a waver or is unrecognizable. You can generally post social media shots for non commercial purposes, here, on this site, for instance.

I tend to show people my shots if they approach me. That solves everything. Some old bats are too ignorant to ask and then run up and down the beach hysterical that someone has a camera. You can’t solve stupidity or ignorance.

One old crow did exactly that to me, and when someone approached me about it, I showed them the photos and they liked them, so I offered to airdrop copies. Then I chased after the old hag got in her face and took her photo so that she thinks twice about harassing my quiet harmless enjoyment next time. Evil cow.

Also, I photograph men, birds, beetles, seaweed, surfing, pets and entertainers. Cuff me.

I think it's as Tim suggests, some people just go out of their way to find things to be offended by.
