Groynes are such social places.
A groyne is a shore protection structure built perpendicular to the shoreline of the coast (or river), over the beach and into the shoreface (the area between the nearshore region and the inner continental shelf), to reduce longshore drift and trap sediments. -

Here's a shot showing the groynes protruding into the water at my favourite beach about six weeks ago.

Yesterday, the visibility was a little better, and I got a few shots showing how the wildlife share and enjoy the groynes.

Love the three herons image ST......

🏆

That 3-heron shot was so perfect, I thought it was a composite at first glance haha!

Thanks, Ray.

On a good day last year, when the tide is lower but not fully out, I saw nine of them all lined up like this. This was before I got a camera. If I can catch a shot like that this year, I'll entitle the image The Supremes.

Yes 9 of them lined up would be something of a National Geeographic winner.....

I've seen groynes before, but I've not seen a wooden one before - the ones where I grew up were constructed from rocks and concrete.

There are groynes constructed with rock in a different part of the beach, but no concrete. But the wildlife prefers the wooden ones.

It can be challenging to see another's point of view or keep disparate views in focus.

Nine - all in agreement. This is the most I've gotten all in a row like this. I was disappointed that their colours are not as vivid as they were in some of the shots above, taken six weeks ago.
Edit - I have replaced the original image. I took down the exposure on the Great Blue Herons a bit. Now, they look more like the pictures above.

It was gorgeous day for the Great Blue Herons. Today, I had the time and the light to try the shot at f/16 and f/22 to get more of the birds in focus. They were not all of one mind, but I still like the pictures.
Nine (again), liberals and conservatives.

Groynes are such social places, and sometimes not so much. At low tide on a bright day, there are no shorebirds to be found.

This morning, half an hour before sunrise, I saw a dozen Great Blue Herons on a single groyne.

Unfortunately, by the time I got a little closer, there were only eleven.

That lasted for just a second, and then there were only ten.

Was the little one saying "Roll over"?

(yes, channelling my inner child!)

Three months later, these ducks are fast asleep.
