Given that our weather has been generally crap for getting out with the camera, I haven't been out much at all, but my garden has provided some nice insects and flutters, and I did get an afternoon at a reserve in. Here's a selection with some descriptions on each. I'll post some moths from trapping later.
Brimstone Butterfly
Oviposting Ruddy Darter, the only dragonfly species to lay eggs on plants instead of in water.
You int seen me, right? A shy Common Darter
Freshly emerged Southern Hawker (Male)
Freshly emerged Southern Hawker (Female) on the bush next to the male.
Ruddy Darter, sitting right in the middle of a footpath. I nearly trod on it.
Heavily cropped shot of a Ruby Tailed Wasp. A non stinging wasp that lays it's eggs in bore holes made by bees. They look like an armoured jewel.
Cabbage Wasp. Another non stinging/biting wasp that lays eggs in bee holes. The extra long tail is the oviposter, so she can get deep into the bore hole. These are not too comoon, and quite amazing.
Pied Plumehorn - one of the bigger Hoverfly species.
Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar. The first time I've had chance to photograph these amazing caterpillars. 3 different ones here in various stages of development. Falling into the reedbad after wasn't in the plan. Sometimes we have to suffer for our art
Peacock Butterfly on the Buddleia in our garden. They look superimposed in photos because of the reflective scales on the wing edges.
Greenfinch on my summer house roof. Intense colours.
Migrant Hawker in the garden. We have had several this year. Fantastic to see.
