Thanks Kev, glad you like the shots. Like any great city, London has its good and bad points, but its good points far outweigh its bad points, at least for the 9.5 millon people that live here. I've lived in London for the past 35 years and really enjoy living in London (most of the time), even though at times it can be challenging. I also really enjoy the countryside and the outdoors, its a great place to visit and recharge the batteries, but I wouldn't want to live there, at least not for now. I am a city boy through and through and London is a great city to live in. Another great city I think I could live in is San Franciso (population of greater san francisco about 4.5 million). Melbourne (population of greater Melbourne about 5.2 million), my home town, is also a great city, and a great place to raise kids, but I don't think I could live there now, just a little too small (in every respect).

Thanks Thad. I am reminded of the famous quotation from Samuel Johnson to his friend and biographer in 1777, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. The full quote is, "Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." Well, not be fully accurate in 2023, but pretty close.

Great images
Went down there a month ago, had a really great time, walked just over 16 miles sightseeing, theatre etc. in 2 days “cream crackered ” but glad I live in Gloucestershire …

Thanks Tony. Gloucestershire is a wonderful county and boasts some of the most beautfiul countryside in England, Cotswolds, Forest of Dean and the stunning Wye Valley. And who doesn't love the honey-stone towns and villages set within glorious rolling hills. Gloucestershire is a great place to visit. But as Sherlock Holmes once said, “It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.”

You're getting some good low light mileage out of that camera!

Thanks Tim, the A7iv and GM 70-200 + 2.0TC lens is performing really well in low light even with reasonably high ISOs. However LrC Denoise AI is also doing a great job.

HMS Belfast moored on the Thames as a museum ship. She is a Town class light cruiser commissioned in August 1939. She saw action as an escort for the Arctic Convoys and took part in Operation Overlord supporting the D Day landings. She was later deployed to the Far East and joined the British Pacific Fleet in the war against Japan. She also served during the Korean War.

Ed, I need to comment. Your progress over this past year has been exemplary. When you joined in January '23 you stated that you were new to photography. As the year progressed, so did your output. These last few months you've posted some top-drawer images. The ship above is one such, in my opinion.

You've asked questions about processing, how to get a certain look that you could see in your head, and while you may not have always agreed with our responses, your work continued to progress.

I'm not posting this with the idea that accolades from me mean anything to anyone, and you may not care one iota about my opinion, but if this place had an award for most improved, you'd get my vote.

Now then, when was the last time you saw our artist friend? Did you ever get to see the finished painting?

Thanks Tim, your comments, and those of our colleagues mean a lot to me. I feel as though I've learnt alot from this forum, not just from the comments about my photographs, and replies to my questions, but from reading the comments posted on all the topics and simply from seeing the work of others, for this I am extremely grateful. Clearly, I still have a lot to learn about the science and art of photography and post processing, but I find the learning as enjoyable as the doing. For a beginner such as myself, I think the forum is a tremedous resource for learning.

As far as I know, the artist has not completed his painting and as the trees are now bare again, I've been expecting his return to complete his painting. Each time I walk past his viewing post I expect to see him there, but the weather has been rather cold of late, so I guess that it is not conducive for painting. I'll keep the forum updated on his progress, next time I see him, I think he might complete the painting this year.
