Good morning. I’m down in Puerto Rico (Patillas) for the next few days. I brought my camera but am having trouble finding any good birding spots near where I’m staying. It looks like everything is further north or east. Can anyone suggest some spots closer to Patillas? There are some pelicans hanging near our AirBnb but they seem to disappear when I’m out there with my camera. Any other suggestions for photo opportunities in this area of the island would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I haven't spend any time in the SE side of the island but the thing with PR is that birding really doesn't change much on the island. Most of the birds that are found there are found throughout the island with the unfortunate exception of the Puerto Rican Parrot which is near extinction and only found in El Yunque. Unfortunately Puerto Rico doesn't have much of a birding culture so there are not many sites with lists but I would suspect that the Punta Pozuelo area would be good for the coastal birds and that Bosque Estatal de Carite would be good for the interior birds.

Orange-Fronted Parakeets usually fly in flocks and like flowering trees more common in the mountains. Monk Parakeets are super easy to find in Old San Juan. Greater Antillean Grackle should be easy to find along any interior road. Venezuelan Troupial, Bananaquits and Puerto Rican Emerald should all be fairly common in lightly wooded areas near the shores.

If you want a shot at a Puerto Rican Tody cut up an orange into a couple slices and put it in a wooded area.
