Hi everyone,
My name is Brock Gunter-Smith, I’m a boring, incredibly average, mildly geeky father of 3. I live in central Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I usually describe it as “an 8 hour drive north of Minneapolis”. I’m looking to photography as a way to try and find a new hobby that will allow me to have fun, challenge me to learn new skills, and help me capture the wildlife around me that makes me smile.
I’ve used a lot of cameras over the years, but the first camera I bought myself was a Nikon F-401 that I purchased using 1.5 years of babysitting income. It and a Sigma 70-210 lens travelled with my family and I on a 3 week vacation and safari in Africa.
I bought my wife an a6000 a few years back for birding, and that was it. I got hooked. I’ll own up to never having properly done the work to learn the equipment and study proper technique. SO, that’s what I’m starting to do now.
I just bought an A7RIV a few days ago and LOVE IT TO DEATH!!! Now, once I read the manual and start putting in the work, I look forward to actually learning how to use it properly and to better effect.
To look at some of my over-processed, awkward first attempts this year just shooting from the balcony in our back yard you can view, heckle and be judgemental here: https://brock.gs/birds/ (note, this is just a forwarding page to an iCloud public photo album so it’s easier to find my page).
I’m really looking forward to lurking for a while, then starting to hopefully jump in to asking for some feedback, gentle advice, or directions to resources that some of you may have found helpful that may be something me to consider as I start my education.
Brock
I will attach a couple of my favourite photos from the last couple days here to just jazz up this introductory post a bit.
