Sony A7R III FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 G vs FE 200–600 mm F5,6–6,3 G OSS

Hey there,

For the upcoming safari next year, I have been thinking for a long time whether I should get an FE 200-600 or FE 100-400. Since I already own a 70-200 f2.8 GM, the overlap of the focal length ranges of 100-200 mm seems needless to me. Are you of the same opinion as me?

Furthermore, if I decide to go for the 200-600mm, I'm thinking of getting a 1.4x TC as well. Not only to increase the focal length of the super telephoto lens even further, but also to use it with my 70-200mm f2.8 in combination with its great aperture values. However, I have not yet been able to gather any experience reports for this, since there is still talk of the SEL70200GM2. However, since I don't own this lens, I don't think the reviews are very representative for me. How does the 1.4x TC perform on a 70-200GM (A7Riii)?

Hi the 200-600 can be good with the 1.4x if used carefully, I have the 100-400 as well and to be honest I dont use it too much, and with the 1.4 x it does have issue in my opinion.

Possibly not as much of an issue to you but obviously 200-600 at 600 with 1.4x is f9 which in really good light is fine, but is very limiting here in the UK, you will see a small amount of vignetting with the 1.4x on the 200-600 I recently tested the 1.4 on my 200-600 after not using it much, its on here somewhere , but here are

Dependant on where and which safari provider you use you will find in all probability you will take more shots below 4oomm
Than over .....in addition as you will more often than not be in good light, if on safari during hot summer months I recommend
The 70-200mm with a TCx1.4 plus the 200-600mm lens.. these should cover 95% of the shots you will have available to you and will
Minimise changing lenses in the field where it often gets very dusty etc.....

In practice you will be able to cover many of your shots with the 200- 600, and the higher f6.3 number will not be a constraint
In bright African weather.......if you have a a 1.4 TC for the 70-200 (which works very well) , you can also try on the 200-600.....

That sounds good. I guess that eliminates my consideration of the 100-400mm lens completely.

Do you have some sample images you took with the 70-200 (MK1!) + 1.4x TC?
