Right time, right place. We were driving to the Albufera national park, when I spotted this huge flock of Glossy Ibis wading in a semi flooded field. I just managed to get parked up and over the road in time to see them take off.

Great shot, Dave. Must have been an amazing sight.

They are not that common in the UK but we've had one locally (RSPB Lodmoor, Weymouth) for a few days. It seems to roost there then it flys a few miles to the other side of Weymouth to feed during the day. I was at Lodmoor yesterday morning and managed to get a couple of shots - they aren't the prettiest of birds!

Thanks, it was incredible to see.

Indeed they are kind of awkward, our friends in the antipodes refer to them as bin chickens, they can be scavengers.

We had one locally (Norfolk Broads) a couple of years ago. Caused a minor stir.

I didn't see nearly as many as I reckon to in Spain this year. One massive flock on the way down, I estimate a couple of thousand, and this one, probably 500 ish. Sadly I couldn't pull over for the first, so this was a bit of a result.

Not the best looking but if you get them with the right light angle you can see where they get the Glossy name from. I am still working on better shots.
