I used to live in SOCAL during the early 2000's and used to enjoy the Hot Import Nights and car related meets in Los Angeles. I've moved on from my car obsession, but I look forward to any automotive photography you post!
If you're up for a road trip, Willow Springs Raceway might have some fun events you can go to and get some action shots. I drove the Big Willow track once, and it was an unforgettable experience.
Regarding city shots, the financial district in downtown LA is a ghost town at night, so if night-time cityscapes are your thing, that's not a bad place to start.
