Lesser Emperor - a relatively scarce breed and very sparsely populated. They rarely sit!

A great set of images especially the Lesser Emperor, well done for getting that. I can’t believe all of them are out down there, we just have four spot chasers appearing now.

Thanks Iain. It's been a slow start, and the butterflies are alarmingly absent in general, but the different climate certainly makes a big difference, even just 3-400 miles north

Great shots. I love watching dragonflies but they rarely seem to sit still. I went out this morning to take some photos with the Sony 90mm macro in a rose garden and as I was leaving saw some dragonflies and was able to get close enough to get some shots. Can you help me with the ID of these two? I think the first is a Blue Dasher but not sure about the second one. Google indicates some sort of Pennant.

Nice, not my area of expertise, being American species, but a bit of research shows Blue Dasher is right and Halloween Pennant is a good bet on the second.

Thanks. That was what I was thinking. I was able to get within a foot of it after it flew away and returned to the same place a few times.

It's very difficult to get close enough to any of our species to use a macro, they are very flighty unless eating. This is why most of mine are on the 200 600
