Does anyone out there have any idea or know how many of the high end prime lens Sony sell world wide I am thinking about the 400 2.8 and the 600 f4 in particular?

More than two?

I don't even know how you'd find that out.
It just makes you wonder how many people will buy lenses that are for the 400 f 2.8 10.5 k uk price and 11.6-12 k for the 600 f4 uk price? it cannot be huge numbers can it world wide even given pros buying in?

I pretty much think they make them to order now, especially with the chip shortages, though I'm sure they had a few hundred back ups at the Olympics. Sales wise I'd reckon no more than 50 worldwide per year, though there seems to be no shortage of rich people on the Sony Facebook pages who have them. Way beyond my means, that's for sure.

I was reading (on another site - ssh, don’t tell Tim) that someone ordered a 600mm GM, and they told him they were building it for him. So, yes, I think they are currently build-to-order. Could be due to the chip shortages - they can’t afford to build the wrong ones and waste chips?

I imagine they sell more normally. But it ain’t “normal” right now :unsure:;)

Back when a-mount was the thing a friend had a 500 f4 bought new and we both put it through its paces and found to our dismay it was not really that sharp at the fast end and only came good mid range, well not being aware of my friends deep pockets at the time he simply said oh well its probably just a poor copy I will get rid and order anothero_O! my reply was why not tell sony and return it, no he said I do not want the hassle of all that back and fourth with sony a new one it is. In fact he never did get the new one next time I met up with him he was holding his new toys canon dx what ever top of the range at the time 600 mm prime 400 prime saying time for a change:eek: we are from different worlds clearly.

Yeah different worlds. I was stunned by how many just bought an A1 when it came out

Camera buyers are no longer moms and dads who want to document little Johnny's football game, they can do that with their phone. People spending the money are either pros, advanced enthusiasts, or hobbyists with a lot of disposable income. Back in the heyday of photography people bought cameras just to take family snapshots. I think as time goes on entry level cameras are going to be phased out completely.
YOU might have hit the nail on the head with the above

If I had to guess I'd probably go with around 500 a year for each lens, but that's a total guess! I won't be adding to those numbers myself anytime soon unless I win the lottery! :)

So not much chance of them filtering down to us then at a cost we can deal with

None! There were 2 used ones on B and H in the US this week, they were still $8500

Brownie. Yep, I can see that, its certainly the death knell on compact cameras, phones and computational photography have killed those off.

Nikons new 800mm F6.3 is slightly more affordable at $6,500.

That's cheaper than first suggested, but still a lot. I'm amazed that people aren't moving to the Olympus OM1 and the new 150 450 zoom, as there you have 50fps and 1000mm 5.6 if you want, and people seem obsessed with figures. 8.5k for that package. It's a remarkable bit of kit and Olympus colours are very pleasing.

Try $9.7k. I just pointed out on another forum the A7 IV and 200-600 are $4500, or $5200 less than the Oly kit. I think that says it all.
I was quoting UK prices, but yeas, the 200 600 and A74 or A9ii are the best value big combo for Wildlife by far. The Olympus kit is impressive though, and still cheaper than a 600f4.

As one of those people (my preorder was in when I finished reading the press release on announcement day), I would like to say that I still haven’t bought a telephoto prime longer than 200mm - I would like a 300mm, or 400mm, or longer, but my pockets aren’t that deep.

However, the A1 is not the most expensive camera I have bought - that would be a Canon 1Ds III (also pre-ordered, way back in 2007) - it was a higher number than the A1, and was in 2007 dollars, not 2021 dollars. Besides, I had a bit more cash than usual due to massive lockdowns (you may have heard about them - they were in all the papers :) ).

I saw quite a few of the people who bought the A1, and many of them were retirees - the kind who are spending their retirement travelling the world (that ain’t me - I am still working!), and they could not travel then, so they had spare cash, too.

I think it was a freak coincidence of circumstances, a freak storm that made Sony a whole bunch of A1 sales last year.

On another note do you think the a1 lives up to the price point and what you expected of it in performance terms

Agreed. I read an article by a Sony insider that said they really didn't expect the demand to be so high, especially for a premium camera. It kind of caught them off guard.
