Taken on the same day as the image above, but first thing in the morning when the morning mist was beginning to lift.
Six different crops of the same photograph, any preferences for which is best? I think options 4, 5 and 6 are better than options 1, 2 and 3 as the crop removes the front of the building on the right of the frame, which was a bit of a distraction.

Option 1 is virtually the full image, just a very slight crop to clean up the edges

Option 2 is a slight crop to remove some of the bottom and top foreground.

Option 3 is a tighter crop, removing more of the top foreground, focusing attention on the cloister and the dome between the columns.

Option 4, this is a tighter crop of Option 1

Thanks Chris. I agree, I think the last three options are better than the first three. I also like Option 6, but I'm also drawn to Option 5 due to the lamp being included - I really like those lamps. But I'm not sure if the lamp is distracting?

I have a friend who has critiqued my photos in the past and he asked me "what's your subject?". Its a leading question because it should be very obvious, and so I pause, look at my subject and the scene, and then it's easier to say what is or isn't a distraction.

If the building in the back is where you want the viewer's eye to be drawn to, then the lamp (with its gilded accents and proximity to the viewer/foreground) is indeed a distraction.
