My wife and I took Saturday to drive the hour and a half to Phillip Island, following multiple sightings of whales at close range the previous weekend. Using the last reported sighting as a starting point we went to a location known as Pyramid Rock, 4 hours later we got our first sighting, unfortunately it was just over 4km out, and only an occasional breathing spout. Visible just in front of the tour boats.

As we prepared to leave, I received a report of a pod sighted only 5-600m from shore a little further to the east. By the time we got there though the pod had moved on, so we took a chance and travelled a bit further east to Cape Patterson. Where we saw probably the same pod travel through still only a little way off shore.

It's not easy getting photos of whales from the shore. You'll have to take a kayak next time!

The story didn't end at Cape Paterson, as they disappeared around a headland one whale breached. So we jumped in the car and headed to Eagles Nest rock lookout. The whales were about 1km off the shoreline but could be seen spouting, and then...
