I’m embarrassed to say I bought the A6600 in 2020 for a trip never taken and probably used it 3 times. I live in Oceanside CA and I’m looking for a group that can help me understand this camera which I’m having a hard time grasping. I’m a novice 😩

Welcome to the Forum Brenda. This is a very good place to be. There are a good number of knowledgeable people here. Also, do some searching for Mark Galer. He has a lot of info online that may help you. I subscribe to his Patreon site which now is $10.00 to $20.00 per month for paid support without any long term commitment. His downloads are all very professional and much more complete over what is available from the manufacturer. Here is the description of his A6600 eBook:

"This is a 515-page eBook in PDF format for the A6600 camera. This eBook offers you learning supporting and contains links to over 50 tutorial movies and additional information that will help you master the craft of taking creative and technically excellent photographs.

This eBook is optimized for a large High Definition/4K screen in horizontal (landscape) orientation. If using Adobe Acrobat to view the book I recommend going to the View menu and choosing Full Screen Mode. Images used to illustrate the content will be display at a 4K (Ultra HD) resolution."

For $10.00 per month, you can have unlimited downloads, like the A6600 mentioned above. For $another $10.00 a month (Now $20.00 total) answer any and all of your questions via his Q&A Forum. I've been a Patron for well over a year and I'm staying. I have a lot to learn. PM me if you have any questions.

Hi Brenda,
Definitely check out Mark Galer's YouTube channel and in particular his Masterclass playlist.

What type of things do you like to photograph? Where were you planning on going going prior to "the outbreak" ? It ruined a 4 week trip to Canada and Alaska for my wife and I, but we'll get there eventually.

Anyway, welcome.

My wife and I have 6600s, great cameras. Very capable but possibly a bit daunting for an absolute beginner.

If you give us a clue as to what you want to photograph, might be able to help.

Along with the above mentioned, there is loads of info on youtube and Google completely free.

To get you going, and this may set a bit of debate going but at least you'll be using the camera:

Set the dial on top to auto

In the menu system set to the highest pixel resolution

Set to jpg or jpg plus raw

Set iso to auto

Pop a 128gb micro sd card in it.

Stick a lens on the front and go out with it.

Stick some photos on here and ask for feedback.

Most importantly, enjoy.

That last bit often gets omitted.

Welcome Brenda, I use the a6400 which is almost the same camera. This is a good group to get inspiration (especially if you like wildlife and landscape photography) and everyone is pretty helpful.

If it makes you feel any better, I got my a6400 right before a once in a lifetime trip 3 yrs ago and I didn't know what I was doing. Came back with a thousand sub par pictures. I WISH I had found this group before then!

Welcome Brenda and thank you for joining up here. It's never to late to learn and you've certainly come to the right place :)

I'd probably recommend taking a look at this tutorial from Michael. He goes through pretty much everything you need to know.
