I guess I will really go for the TC20 now, in order to have the 800mm with my 400.

Pics are looking quite good, but still difficult to judge sharpness with the pics here.

How much did you crop the images?

Quite a lot.

But downsizing to JPEG increases sharpness.

There's a guy on flickr who's put up a number of shots of the 400 2.8 and 2xTC that sold me on its feasibility. I'll try to find the url.

I do have to push the shutter up to 1/4000s ideally for BIF though, and haze and camera movement are readily picked up.

BTW The 2x vignettes noticeably, the 1.4x somewhat less.

The in-camera fade correction doesn't appear to do much but correction in post is easy. And bird shots are often cropped anyway.

I really do like each and everyone one these. But with the Grebes being my favourite waterbird that gets my nod 1st.
When I got my A7ii they told me or I read that the best set up for it was the 1.4 TC so this is the way I want to go.
Yes I won't get as close but I am happy with that. If I get close to what you have got that I will be happy.
