Travel Umbria in the height of summer, really!

Ok, so lesson learnt, don’t travel in summer, to central Italy, in fact any where when the temperature is in the high 30’s low 40’s at times. It doesn’t make for good outdoor experiences without being too stressed!

Any way managed a day out and a day at the villa by the pool in alternating days, but very little time with the camera out taking in the scenery I’m afraid.

Ohh, and mosquitoes, did I mention, mosquitoes… come prepared to fight the mosquitoes… But boy, the scenery is fantastic though, hilly, maybe not the best destination when one of you have two knee replacements and one still in recovery

Any way, so far, we have managed to visit: Perugia, Orvieto, Civita de Bagnoregio, Monteriggioni (Tuscany revisit after 14 years) - Parco Regionale del lago Trasimeno, got one more touring day in the little , let’s see where that takes us…

I want to visit Umbría someday, one of the few pending regions in Italy. Lovely corners despite the summer heat!

An Orange weather alert landed for the region just before we traveled. 40 degrees I can do sitting in the shade by the pool, but walking hilly streets is a bit too much in this heat! Doable but needs pacing, I left the wife at a convenient spot, by a cafe and did 4 miles in civita, climbing up that hill was like walking up to Santorini on the donkey path, but worse as it was mostly in a straight line… I looked like I’d just got out of the shower most of the time, sweating like I was sat in a sauna for 10 minutes! Earlier or later in the season, April, May or September, October might still be hot but not this hot and humid. Definitely be a better experience in those months!

Agreed, Italy in the summer can be brutal. You seem to have made the most of it though!

Proper road trip, the way I like it. Mostly Umbria region, rounded off the trip by visiting Spolleto, Spello, Assisi! Basically a big loop and most of Umbrian region


Way too hot so called it a day after lunch!
