So I am going to my first dirt track late model and mortified race tonight. I am wanting to bring my a7riii. We will be in the front row, but with a chain link fence in front of us. What would be my best options as far as settings and lens? The races start at 6pm so most of the races will take place in the dark but there is lighting on the track. My lens options are Sigma 100-1400, Tamron 28-200, Sony 90mm. I've never really photographed anything fast-moving like this. Thanks for your help. I included a pic (not taken by me) from the track's FB page to give you an idea.

Sorry Jessica I've only just spotted this post. How did you get on? Shooting through fencing can be tricky unless you are pretty close to it or the gaps are large enough, and even more challenging in low light!

I'll post the pics later when I get off work. They weren't the best. Shooting in the dark, darker than my normal conditions and I'm not used to shooting at high shutter speeds as well. The pictures are nothing to write home about, but it was a great learning experience and can't wait to try again.

Let me see if this works....

Put the URL string in the top entry; then the name you want in the bottom entry. See examples below.

Its the learning experience that we have to enjoy. It wouldn't be fun if it wasn't challenging right?

OK, here they are. I couldn't figure it out at work on my phone, so I had to wait until I got home and had my iPad.

We also had bad seats....but I'm glad we didn't go down closer because my camera and I would have been covered in dust. In the end I had fun with friends and got some new experiences.

Not bad at all for your first time at the track. Got some cool action shots going on there, looks good.

Thanks, that means a lot. 👍

Looks like you grabbed some nice action shots there Jessica despite being up in the stands and the lack of light, well done! It has been a while since I've been to any kind of motorsport event due to covid, but I hope to see some superbike action next month :)

Thank you very much. I wanted to use a faster shutter speed but with it being so dark I wasn't able to. I did quite a bit in post in Lightroom.

Don't ya just love Sony's 'dynamic range' for post improvements.

Yes it is nice!!!

All things considered, you did a very good job. I noticed the lack of responses to your initial question and I waited for some replies as well. Sorry that nothing timely arrived.

It's all good... I did post that a little last minute...
