Hi all

its getting near the time when the fat bloke comes down the chimney and time to treat myself to the present that no one will buy me .. Toying with the idea of a teleconverter .There seems to be two the 2x and the 1.4x was wondering which one would be best for me. The lenses I have are the 70-200 and the 200-600 .. Thank you Gary

If you're shooting in a lot of light, thne you might get away with it. 1.4 will take the 200-600 to ~f8, 2.0 to ~f11. You'd end up shooting at high ISO with degraded AF. The 70-200 takes the 1.4 very well. I might go for the 1.4 first.

I went with the 1.4 for the slightly better low light ability. I've used it on both the lenses you mention and really like it on the 70-200, mine's the macro, with a a6700 body.

I have both but tend to find I use the 1.4 the most, the 2x works well on my 70-200 f2.8 but I can use the 1.4 on my 200-600mm with little effect on AF or IQ.

Which 70-200? If it’s the old 70-200 f/4, the TCs won’t fit. If it’s the new 70-200 f/4 G II, then you get a bonus, because it makes the lens capable of more macro (it’s 0.5 without TC, 0.7 with the 1.4x, and full 1:1 with the 2x)! If it’s either f/2.8 GM, I’d recommend the 1.4x.

On the 200-600, the 1.4x gives better image quality. The 2x pushes aperture down to f/13 wide open at 600mm (1200mm effective), and older cameras cannot AF at that.

I got all detail-oriented about this question a while back. There is too much detail and several samples in the links below.

Yes I agree with other members the 1.4 certainly works well with the 70-200 , but especially this time of year it's useless with the 200 600 unless the strange thing in the sky appears.
