22 September each year is World Rhino Day and in honour of this, I dug up a few rhino photos I took over the last couple of years.

When on safari in South Africa, the safari operators will inevitably ask you not to post any geographical information which could lead poachers to the rhinos and also to wait some time before posting any rhino photos, because there have been incidents where poachers have recognised the surroundings from photos and then knew where to find the rhinos.

Another sad fact is that it is exceedingly rare to find a rhino with a complete horn in South Africa, since conservationists cut off the horns to make them less attractive for poachers. These horns regrow and have to be cut off every few years. The only photo I have here of rhinos whose horns have not been cut, was taken in Tanzania and this is also the only photo of the critically endangered Black rhinos here, the others are of White rhinos which are considered "Near Threatened" on the IUCN Red list.
