Sigma has announced their latest lens for Sony full-frame E-Mount and this time it’s the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens.
At the time of writing it is the smallest and lightest constant F2.8 standard zoom lens on the market for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Weighing in at just 470g, which is roughly 43% lighter than their existing 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens. It has also been designed by the same engineer who designed the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens.
The lens body features a AF/MF switch and has a 67mm filter thread. There is no stabilization built into the lens itself, but this shouldn’t be too much of an issue if your camera has in-built body stabilization (IBIS).
The 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | C has an advanced optical design that includes three aspherical, two FLD, and twoSLD elements. The anti-ghosting design and use of Super Multi-Layer Coating and Nano Porous Coating controls flare for high-contrast results in backlit conditions. It also features a water and oil-repellent coating on the front side of the lens.
In order to fit with the design concept of the Contemporary line, which balances performance with portability, the new lens features a simpler dust-and splash-proof structure and smaller switches.
The lens features just one lightweight focusing element, which helps to keeps the AF unit small. This, along with a quiet and fast stepping motor, makes for responsive and near-silent autofocus performance.
The
The body of the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | C is built from a polycarbonate called TSC (Thermal Stable Composite), which has a comparable level of thermal shrinkage to aluminium. This helps reduce differences between the thermal shrinkage of the metal and non-metal parts, ensuring stable levels of performance even in an environment with extreme temperature changes.
