The Sony FE 200-600 F5.6-6.3 G lens has quickly become one of the most popular lenses for Sony Alpha wildlife shooters, however due to its size you might have found that your favorite camera bag is no longer big enough.
Since I run the Sony Alpha Wildlife Shooters Group on Facebook I noticed that bag recommendations for the 200-600 were starting to pop up on a regular basis.
So with the help of our amazing group members who have allowed me to publish their bag photos (thank you so much) I’ve created this guide that will hopefully help you to find the best bag for your Sony 200-600 along with all of the other gear that you like to carry along with it.
Please note that this guide is a work in progress. If you can recommend any additional bags not included here and also share a photo, then please add them to this this post in the Sony Alpha Wildlife Shooters Group on Facebook and I can then update this article. Thank you!

Bag Sizing Guide for the 200-600
The 200-600 internal zoom lens has a length of around 332mm / 13.07 inches with the hood reversed and lens cap on. Attach a camera like the Sony a7III, a7R III, a7R IV, a9 or a9II and the length is now around 380mm / 14.96 inches.
If you want to carry the lens with the lens hood in place and the camera attached you are now looking at a length of around 455mm / 17.91 inches. Adding the 1.4x teleconverter will take you to 390mm / 15.35 inches with the hood reversed or 470mm / 18.50 inches with the hood attached.
As for the depth, if you measure from the top of the Sony 200-600 lens foot to the opposite side of the lens hood then this is around 145mm / 5.7 inches, it’s also the same if you are using the Kirk LP-68 Arca-Swiss lens foot replacement (#afflinks B&H | Wex Photo). If you remove the lens foot then now the largest element is the lens hood with a diameter of around 125mm / 4.92 inches.
So you’ll want a bag that with an internal depth of at least 145mm / 5.7 inches unless you twist the lens foot on the collar or remove it to reduce the height, then 125mm / 4.92 inches will be enough.
Some bags are rounded at the top which can make the longest internal dimensions a little misleading when you want to add an item with a larger diameter like the 200-600, therefore you’ll probably want to make sure there is 25-50mm / 1-2 inches of additional space to accommodate for this.
Small Bags – 20 Liters and Less
If you are looking for a small day pack for the 200-600 and just a couple of extra items then here are some choices for you.
MindShift Backlight 18L

What is everyone using or buying as divoders to put in the bags or do the bags come with the dividers?
Thanks for the help in advance
Timothy Mayo
Sorry for the slow reply Kyle. Most bags do some with the dividers already.
Gary Nicholson
Thanks for writing the article Timothy, very helpful.
I took delivery of a Mindshift Backlight 26l today, and can confirm that the 200-600G attached to an A7iii will fit with the hood attached in the ready to use position.
Sunil Pradhan
Can Lowepro Pro Runner 350 AW (1st Gen) accommodate Sony 600 mm f/4, with or without camera attached
Timothy Mayo
Sorry Sunil, this isn’t a combination that I’ve tried or heard from anyone on.
BENGT Nyman
Hi, great article.
1. I do not want to reverse the lens hood. Is there a fast bag, sling bag, holster bag or back pack that fits the Sony A7R IV with the 200-600 and lens hood attached ?
2. If not, is there an accessory lens hood which slides or folds back.
Photographer on two wheels.
David
That is exactly what I have been searching for! Unfortunately I haven’t found anything yet. It looks like I will have to custom make what I need. Please let us know if you do find the right bag.
DD
Timothy Mayo
Thanks Bengt and sorry for the slow reply. I expect you might have already found a solution to this problem? I’ve not seen a sling or holster bag that would accommodate the a7R IV + 200-600 with the hood attached, or a flexible hood. Have you managed to find anything in the meantime?
Hans Kessler
Thanks for the help. I bought the Lowepro Flipside 400. It is identical to the above featured 300 except it is a few centimetres/inches wider… This allows me to use two rows of dividers, left and right of the 200-600 lens with A7R4 in the middle… With the 300 it would not be possible. I can easily pack my small DJI Mini 2 drone as well as a small flash, and several lenses… I think its just what I need for any short field trip. Photo attached…IMG_1990.jpeg
Timothy Mayo
Glad that the article was helpful Hans and I’m sorry for the slow reply to your very helpful comment. I’m sure other will find this information useful. Unfortunately the photo isn’t showing for some reason. Have a great Christmas!
Simon Leung
Hi, Tim, thank you for writing this useful article. Finally, I chose Peak Design Everyday Backpack 20L, which not only fits the Sony A7R4 + 1.4x + 200-600 + hood (reversed), but also has space for clothes, water and food. Of course, this backpack also has some small pockets for you to put some small objects, such as tablets, rechargeable batteries, etc.
I took some photos to share with you:

Hi Simon. First of all apologies for the slow reply, I missed your comment somehow. Thank you very much for the useful information and also the photos. I’ve got a couple of updates to make to this article, would you mind if I included a couple of your photos? Happy to link to a website or social profile and give you full credit. Many thanks! Tim
Glenn Gomez
Hi Tim…great site. Please advise on a light bag to carry the 600f 4 and a 100-400 with 2 bodies.
Timothy Mayo
Hi Glenn. I don’t have the 600 F4 so it’s hard to recommend the best bag for this combination of gear. There are some suggestions in the Wildlife Group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/alphawildlifeshooters/permalink/746259512571155

Great summary Mayo! Just got this lens and came here to Alpha Shooters immediately.
Timothy Mayo
Glad that it helped! 🙂
Jan
Hey there,
thank you very much for putting this together! But I think there is a mistake with the Tenba Axis 24 picture. I just ordered it and there is no way to fit the 200-600 with hood and camera attached. Both Tenba pictures show the 32l version. Greetings from Germany!
Timothy Mayo
Hey Jan. That’s really strange that it doesn’t fit. I’ve just been through the posts on the Wildlife Group on Facebook and people are definitely using the Tenba Axis 24 and have the hood attached as well. If you are on Facebook you should be able to see these posts:

Unless the dimensions of this bag have changed or there are additional padded dividers?
Noel Comess
I use the Tenba Solstice 24L and it works perfectly with the 200-600 on a body with battery grip and TC dropped (so to speak) in through the top. I’ll admit that the divider setup takes a little bit of ingenuity. And as someone mentioned below, you can’t keep anything chunky in the top flap pocket.
Timothy Mayo
Thanks for your feedback on the Tenba Solstice 24L Noel. Happy New Year too!

Yes, it fits in just nice! The only thing is you can’t put anything bulky in the top opening zippered section, nothing pointy or hard, as it will protrude onto the camera back, something squishy or flat is fine. The only other thing I found is that if you want to remove the camera and lens attached through the top section the bag can’t be packed too full or the hood of the lens won’t pass through very easily and gets caught up. As the bag stands very well on it’s base, I think the best bet is to remove them sideways on. Mine just arrived today and Iv’e been experimenting with different set ups and I’m really pleased with how versatile it is.

Thanks for the article, I was just looking around at other options, I did a search and this write up came up. It gave me some ideas… But just so you know, the Peak Design 30L Everyday Backpack works pretty good too, with the 200-600mm mounted on a FF body with lens hood reversed.

Many thanks for the information on the Peak Design 30L Everyday Backpack Ken, I’m sure quite a few people will find this useful! All the best, Tim

Thank you for such a thorough and detailed comparison. I currently own the Sony 100-400mm GM which i use for birding and such and I love it. I’m seriously considering the 200-600mm for the extra reach but the added weight is a tough compromise for a hobbyist. I’m thinking of renting the 1.4 teleconverter before deciding. The bag guide was The cherry on the top!!!

Glad to hear that you found it helpful Adrian and the bag guide too! Definitely worth renting the 1.4x to see how you get on. You’ll definitely notice the extra weight and size of the 200-600 initially, but after using it for a few months you soon get used to it. Thanks for dropping by! 🙂

Great review Tim. Wanted a better bag that would carry my A7R4 200-600 and TC with hood complete. That will be my go to for most single body trips now. Ordered a Tenba 24L bag via your page.

Thanks for the bag guide! One thing; I would recommend never travel with your camera attached to a lens. I have seen on several occasions that the connection between the lens and body breaks in case of a bag drop.
Timothy Mayo
Thanks for commenting and the travel tip Hans, I’ll add this to the article. Personally when I’m out I prefer to travel with the camera attached for convenience, but if I’m travelling and the bag isn’t on my back then I prefer to detach the camera just to be safe.

Thank you for taking the time to compare all the bags in this post.
I’ve always been a big fan of the ThinkTank / Mindshift bags. Very durable.
Timothy Mayo
Glad to hear that you found the article helpful Randolph and thanks for your feedback on the Think Tank bags. I now have 3 of them myself, so hopefully I won’t be needing a new bag for a while now!

Think Tanks Glass Limo fits the Sony 200-600 with lense hood and camera body attached, ready to shoot. It’s great! Quality is also top notch!
Timothy Mayo
Great. Thank you very much for letting me know Nelson!
