The Sony a7R V can shoot up to a maximum of 10 FPS (frames per second).
However, 10 FPS is only possible when you are shooting in JPEG/HEIF or Compressed RAW file types and with the mechanical shutter.
If you shoot Uncompressed RAW or Lossless Compressed RAW with the mechanical shutter then the maximum frame rate is only 7 FPS, and this reduces even further to 5 FPS with the electronic shutter.

The following table displays the maximum FPS you can expect depending on file type and drive mode you are shooting in when using the electronic shutter.

Summary
It’s only possible to achieve the maximum 10 FPS with the a7RV when you are using the mechanical shutter and shooting in Compressed RAW, JPEG or HEIF file types.
If you want to shoot in Uncompressed RAW or Lossless Compressed then the maximum frame rate is reduced to 7 FPS when using the mechanical shutter.
If you use the electronic shutter or put the camera into silent mode which automatically selects the electronic shutter then the maximum frame rate now reduces to 8 FPS when shooting in Compressed RAW, JPEG or HEIF file type.
If you want to shoot in Uncompressed RAW or Lossless Compressed then the maximum frame rate is reduced to 5 FPS when using the electronic shutter.

Pergear now do a 260Gb CF Express Type A for £134 on their site (If you enter your email you get a 5% discount). Two 260Gb cards I paid £260 (including £6 postage). They have a 5 year warranty. I was a bit concerned I was buying something not as good as the competition as on the card it says 400mb/s write. This is a sustained write speed. So for bursts of shooting it will be more like 700-900mb/s (Articles on line go in to a lot of detail).
Basically this compares well with a 256 V90 card but is 2/3 of the cost (at least!) and about 3 times faster!!!

Hi Wes. I have recently tested the Pergear 260GB CFexpress Type-A cards in my Sony A7RV Memory Card Guide. In-camera they are only writing at around 464 MB/s which makes them one of the slower Type-A options for the A7RV. However they are still much faster than using a UHS-II SD card though and priced very competitively.

Thanks, this is useful information. When you shot Compressed RAW + JPEG Extra fine, did you write to the same card? I would be curious if you would get the same results writing Compressed RAW to a CF Express and JPEG to an SD V90, or writing to separate SD V90 cards. My guess is the performance would be the same, but the buffer would fill faster.

Hey David. Apologies for the very slow reply to your comment, somehow I’ve only just spotted. it. Yes I was writing Compressed RAW + JPEG Extra fine to the same card. The frame rate would remain the same if shooting Compressed RAW to a CF Express and JPEG to an SD V90 but the buffer would be hit sooner and take longer to clear because you are always restricted by the slowest card.
