Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD Lens Announced

Tamron has announced a new 20-40mm F2.8 Di II VXD zoom lens for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras.

The Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD is already available to pre-order for $699.00 in the US, £879.00 in the UK and €999.00 in Europe. First shipments are expected to start on October 27, 2022 all being well.

As the name suggests, there’s a variable focal range of 20-40mm and a constant maximum aperture of F2.8, the minimum aperture is F22.

This new wide-angle lens has a 9 bladed circular diaphragm and it’s constructed of 12 elements in 11 groups, including four LD (low dispersion) elements, two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements and one Hybrid Aspherical element.

The lens weighs in at just 365g / 12.9 oz with a diameter of 74.4mm (2.9 in) and length of 86.5mm (3.4 in).

The minimum focusing distance is 17cm (6.7″) at 20mm for a magnification ratio of 1:3.8. The filter size is 67mm like many of Tamron’s E-Mount Lenses.

Autofocus is driven via Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motors which Tamron claims is compatible with many Sony Alpha camera features including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

The focus ring can be customized via Tamron’s Focus Ring Function Setting to allow it to be used for other settings if desired. The rotation arc of the zoom ring is just 65º making it easy to zoom in and out when required.

The lens is also constructed of a moisture-resistant construction and there’s a fluorine coating on the front lens element to help keep dirt and water at bay.
