Tamron has announced firmware updates for three of its Sony E-mount zoom lenses.
The updated firmware brings improved AF tracking for the Tamron 50–400mm F4.5–6.3 Di III VC VXD and the 150–500mm F5–6.7 Di III VC VXD lenses along with support for the new AF Assist function during video recording on supported cameras.
AF Assist basically allows you to change the subject in focus by using the focus ring of the lens.
The 20–40mm F2.8 Di III VXD also gets support for the AF Assist but no additional AF tracking improvements, I guess Tamron is happy with the AF performance of this lens.
The 50–400mm F4.5–6.3 and 20–40mm F2.8 lenses also gain support for Tamron’s Lens Utility Mobile app, making it a lot easier to adjust settings and change custom button functions on the go using an Android device (Google Play Store). Unfortunately there is no version available for iOS at this time.
You can download the firmware updates through Tamron’s Lens Utility App.
Future firmware updates should be possible through Android devices for the 50–400mm F4.5–6.3 and 20–40mm F2.8 lenses, whilst the 150–500mm F5–6.7 lens will need to be updated through the camera body.
