Many thanks to dragonsdream for recommending this trip, it really was a cracker.

These were from a 9 day trip cruising around the Svalbard archipelago aboard MS Quest. There were 53 guests on the boat, 3 Naturetrek guides, and 5 expedition team members.

Photos are a mix of shots, taken from land, aboard the boat or from the zodiac.

There were a mix of ages on the boat, but mainly in the autumn years.

We were extremely lucky on this trip, we had 2 separate sightings of Polar bear. 2 bears were not only seen from extremely close distance in the zodiac, but both were very active and demonstrated a good range of activities, they can sometimes be spotted, but do nothing more than sleep for 3 hours. 2 further bears were fairly distant but could be observed, sliding in the snow, walking and swimming in the pack ice and even taking a bear comfort break.

We were also extremely privileged to see a bowhead whale, this is a right whale of which there have only been 60 sightings in 80 years.

We also had great views (although my photos are a bit pants), of a Sabine gull. The birders amongst you, will know how rare that is.

In case anyone is thinking of booking this type of trip, have a good discussion with your operator. The Norwegian government are imposing new regulations which will reduce the number of zodiac landing sites from around 200 to 30 and there will be an exclusion zone of around 500 metres around polar bears. Some of the shots below were taken from around 30 - 40 metres. These regulations come into force next year.

All jpegs sooc.

One of the later shots may be upsetting to some, please don't proceed, if you are of a delicate disposition.

Super pics. I especially love the bear pics.

I am of a delicate disposition --- but a bear's gotta eat, and I'm no vegetarian either. And it's one of the best pics of the set.

I just want to get a few up while I'm hanging around. Will add more information to a later post.

Great shots Dave! Love the polar bear shots, I guess you were at 600mm! I think Svalbard is a really interesting place. I spent 2 weeks there a few years ago for work, unfortunately, I wasn't into photography then, so only had my phone camera, and I was there in the winter during perpetual night. Very weird place. Just days before I arrived, a polar bear got into a school yard, right in town, and was shot dead by the teachers - everyone is armed there, and everybody drinks to excess (whisky is very popular and as there is no tax, quite cheap by Norwegian standards), makes for an explosive combination. As visitors we were not issued with arms they were given a can of bear repelant spray. We were told if a bear gets too close, spray him in the face - yeah right!

Great set.

Stunning shots and scenery Dave! Definitely one for the to-do list.

Wonderful pics. The bears are the stars, but every pic is a winner.

I'm really overawed.

It is a word.

I can say this.... I just don't have the patience, usually, for more than a few pics in a post or thread, but going through these was like going on a magic trip. I'll be very happy to see the next 50! 🙏

Very very good images! Did you visit the mainland aswell? I've been to Svalbard once on a partly work, partly leisure trip, sadly it was before my photography interest, and in november, which means no sun whatsoever

Yes! The government is taking steps to protect the wildlife here. We are also taking steps to reduce the russian impact on the island, they do still have an active coal mine here. Norway also have a one active coal mine here, mainly to provide the local power plant with coal since there is no high voltage cables connected to the mainland.

Happy you enjoyed Norway! If you ever visit again, i can recommend the west side of the mainland.

Dave, awesome shots of the polar bears - I'm surprised you didn't have to use the 1.4x TC for all those shots, looks like you may have been pretty close. What type of vehicle did you go out on and was your guide armed? Where you always shooting from the inflatable?

I'm currently in Oslo before flying home. Great place, prices are a tad on the steep side. £11 pounds for 40cl of beer hurts quite a bit.

We did the Hurtigruten postal boats up the west coast in 2018. Another great trip, but not for the travel sick. The sea when we rounded the top towards Russia was extremely bumpy. There were only 6 of us that made breakfast that morning.

I used the 1.4 from the boat, but didn't need it from the zodiacs.

All of the bear shots are either from the boat or a rib, you would not be allowed to land if bears were present. The risk is very real. They are extremely well camouflaged and guides went on a scouting trip before any landing. We were never allowed in front of the armed guide.

Our guides were armed with flare guns and rifles loaded with frangible rounds. None have ever had to use their rifles, mostly loud noises such as revving a snowmobile engine causes the bears to flee. A flare is used first and only one guide had used a flare in the past.

Absolutely superb
