Sony A6700 An unnecessary accessory: JJC Thumbs Up Grip

I was curious about the aftermarket grip assist I've seen a few Fuji owners stick on their camera. Well a few drinks, and a relatively inexpensive Amazon purchase later, I found one for the A6700.

It mounts in the hot-shoe and is braced well enough that it doesn't significantly torque the hot shoe sideways.

It has a neat party trick too: it pivots so you can still access your dials.

So why did I disparage it in my thread title? Well, in using it for a whole day when also testing the Viltrox 35mm, I found that that the additional place to rest my thumb was mostly... how shall I put it? Superfluous. By default, perhaps because I've used A6XXX bodies for 5 yrs, my thumb rests on the provided nub where the C1 button is housed.

However, to make use of this thumb-rest, my thumb [and therefore palm] needs to be higher on the grip and the fleshy bit of my palm can make contact with the control wheel and/or delete button. That is less than ideal.

I posted this because everyone has a different grip, or you may have differently shaped hands, and perhaps it might be of some use to you. It wasn't expensive ($20) and I think they have a version available for the A7C-II as well ($16) if you're interested, just search Amazon for "Metal Thumb Grip for Sony Camera" and you should find A6700 and A7CII (which means it will probably fit the A7CR too).

That appears to block access to the multi function wheel so that you can adjust your settings. Doesn't that make it more difficult to use if you have to move that out of the way?

The thumb rest swings toward you so you can access the PASM wheel and the stills/video/S&Q switch; neither of which I touch much when I'm out and about. I do however use the scroll wheel on top right often, as I have it set for Aperture control, so that's annoying.
