The magnificent balconies of Old Theatre Street Valletta, opposite St.Paul's Cathedral. This style of balconies dates back to the late 1600's/early 1700's. I believe they are Arabic in origin. They can be found all over the island, but there are some magnificent examples in Valletta. Green is a popular colour, but that is fairly recent and dates back to the time when the Royal Navy was based there. The green paint was a navy paint and so was easily found and relatively cheap. It also had the added advantage that it was weather proof and so offered great protection to the wooden structures.
