Just a quick hello to introduce myself. I’m Michael and I’m a new, old photographer. I was heavy into film cameras 30 years ago. And now I’m back with a new Sony camera. I’m hoping to learn a lot from everyone here

Welcome to the forum @Michael A. Which Sony camera do you have?

I went deep and did the a7RV. I wanted high res for architecture, and the ability to take spectacular photographs. And the fact that it does video well is kind of a plus. And the setup and programmability options all me to setup multiple variables. Did some basic EF lenses to start, but already have my eye on G & GM lenses for my next buys.

I have an a7RV. Let me know if I can help you out with anything. Having said that, I’m still learning myself after 18 months or so. Maybe more fine tuning than learning.

Thank you Richard! I will definitely take you up on the offer. I literally just got the filters for my lenses, so now it’s time to spend days just learning my way around this computerized monster.

Getting out & taking photos & just playing with settings is a good way to learn. I have just spent a couple of days re-jigging my Function Menu, My Menu & Memory Recall settings. The online guide is pretty helpful too I have found.

I have a 80 pg new user guide, an 800 pg! masters guide, as well as all of the Sony materials. Unfortunately I broke my hand so I won’t be shooting any photographs for a few more weeks. So I’ve got it setup on my tabletop tripod so that I can play around with it along with the various books.
Once I feel comfortable I’ll take it out with my real tripod to the flower gardens and see what happens next.

Bummer! (Do people actually still say that? lol, I'm getting old)

Very frustrating. Wishing you well, and soon to be having lots of fun with your new cameras.

I'm at least one Sony generation behind you, but my a7iv is still a complex beast. Yes, all the complexity is there, but it is, having cut through all that, one of simplest cameras I've ever used. I call it my expensive point and shoot :)

Yeah, the book is a good reference but I wouldn’t read the whole thing! The iPhone Companion is handy. I do find the videos pretty good but they rush through them at a bit of a speed. I have just re-set up my Function Menu & My Menu & Recall Memory settings to have less doubling up & more useful stuff. It’s an ongoing thing. I really need to sort another page in My Menu.

So you can setup another page with just the shortcuts that you need? That would be excellent to setup multiple bracketing options, exposures, etc. if I could

I’m not sure how many My Menu pages you can have. I have three so far. What I have done recently is go through & re-order them so most frequently used stuff is on the first page. I have to say that My Menu is a great idea. I can’t remember if I set it up or if it was already set but pressing the bottom of the control wheel takes you straight to My Menu.

I just found it - you can have up to 42 items in My Menu.

Excellent indeed. It’s what I was hoping for.
