Hey all,

Apologies, this post could have been posted in the full frame or APSC sections, feel free to move.

I’m considering selling my full-frame set-up and going down to Sony APSC.

The reasoning is that I rather have a smaller/lighter set-up. Mostly do street and travel photography casually. I feel that my current setup is overkill for my needs.

Other than the obvious downsides to moving to APSC is there anything else I should consider? Currently looking at the pros and cons and weighing up is worth it my selling my used gear at a loss.

I know the A6700 is basically the same size as the A7CII, but I'm taking into account the APSC lens selection also and their size/weight.

I would also consider change brand if something better out there for APSC.

Thanks for reading.

Have a look at micro 4/3. I have OM1 with a range of lenses. They are also good. (Still have both FF and APSC Sonys but seem to be using Olympus more).

My A6700 with the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 (an APSC lens) is almost as large as your current setup. However, an A6700 with a Sigma 18-50 would be more compact than either [see comparison below]. Point is, lens decision can make or break your size requirements. APSC does however allow you the flexibility of using full frame glass or APSC-specific lenses which tend to be smaller and cheaper.

I would also say that the Sony APSC 18-135mm, although not the brightest with a variable aperture from f3.5-5.6, is a fantastic travel lens due to its range and compact packaging.

Rather than repeat here is a thread asking basically the same thing. Linky to thread

Thanks for the reply. I also have been using camerasize.com to compare potential setups in terms of weight and size.

From what I can see I really have two options that might fit my needs.

Sell my A7CII + 24-70 F2.8 and buy a6700 + 18-50 F2.8

or

Keep my A7CII, sell my 24-70 F2.8 and buy Tamron 20-40 F2.8

I previous has the 18-135 APS-C lens when I had the A6400, before it was stolen. It was very hit-and-miss low light/overcast weather based on the weather we have here in Ireland. I rather stay with a constant aperture.

I stayed with APSC because I'm cheap 😅
If you already have the A7CII, I'd say stay with it. True there are cost and weight savings to switching to APSC body and lens, but as you said you will lose money on the deal and you will lose megapixels.
