Hello all

New user to "nice" cameras, just had a Sony A7 IV delivered today, It's charging up at the moment then it's time to play
Will be watching the excellent Sony A7 IV beginners video by jason Hermann.
I only got the cheap 50mm 1.8 lens with it to get me started but looking to buy a macro lens for product photography and some macro fun around the garden etc.
Thinking about the 90mm 2.8 sony macro or 105mm 2.8 sigma macro, but then I see a sony and sigma 135mm lens, ar they macro? so many expensive options for a beginner!

Hi , JMac this might be worth a read. https://zenithclipping.com/10-best-sony-lens-for-product-photography/ I found and this is just my opinion a macro to be very specialised. Lenses are as you say expensive so do your research before your purchase and ask the guys on here they are a friendly bunch. Depends on what you hope to do with your camera in the future ? as I have had great closeup shots with the 100-400mm. Welcome JMac and thanks for joining up here. Congratulations on the new a7 IV as well! It's hard to go wrong with the Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro lens. I've seen some comparisons between the Sony and the Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro and they appear to be very closely matched. The Sony FE 135 F1.8 GM isn't a macro lens as it only has a 0.25x magnification ration vs the 1.0x for the 90mm Macro lens.

Welcome! I just got back from a vacation to your country; I'm guessing I was a few weeks early for the gardens to be in bloom, as the only thing thriving in the early spring was Gorse and Daffodils Looking forward to your photos.

One point to bear in mind is the minimum focussing distance of your finally selected lens which may not be too critical for product/flower photography etc but if you are looking to shoot insects/bugs and critters this is very important as bug's dont tend to stay around long when staring into a macro lens a centimetre or two away from them.......assuming you can even get that close.

Whist I shoot Sony I also have a Nikon D850 which i retain along with my 200mm f4 manual focus macro lens, with this lens I can maintain a workable distance from my live subjects and get great images.....I tried with the Nikon 105mm lens and found the minimum focussing distance didnt work for me.
