Rumors New rumor: new E-mount camera Fall 2024

A1 mk2 over kill again, who needs more speed, more frame rate, pre-capture, who is driving user or camera?
I am not sure how frame rate or pre-capture takes anything away from what the photographer does. Unless you are in fully manual mode with no light meter and manual focus lenses it is easy to ask who is in control. If manual only is what brings you joy with photography that's great but that clearly isn't what brings others joy. There is no need crap on new features or things you have no intention on using.

I for one look forward to faster frame rates, pre-capture and the ability to use burst mode to get those faster frame rates.

Well I got my answer you need it, and they are not new features, a9iii has pre capture, higher frame rates, and I am not crapping on the old but new features to the A1 mk2, If you want to buy it get on with :)

Need and want are two different things. What I want to be able to capture would be more likely to happen with these features but it is not a need.

If camera line A has a feature that has never appeared on camera line B and then camera line B gets that feature is it not new features for camera line B? It would be cool if you could just go and add features a la carte whenever you wanted.

I have a question for you guys: is the A9III body so much better than the A1, that they will be using the A9III's design for the A1-II?

I don`t know Chris are you talking about size shape and comfort? the A1 mk1 for me is not as comfortable in the hand as some of the other cameras I have

My understanding of the A9iii body is that it has new Function Dial (think the A7R5 has this as well), the C5 button up front, the new Frame Rate option of *, the fully articulating LCD screen and a new better angled shutter release button area.

Gary, David, yes to both of you, I just remembered from SAR that he said most likely using the A9III body and I was curious because I am not familiar with it or the ergonomic improvements. do we have any members with the A9III?

I have the A9 III, A7RV, and A1.

The A7RV was not the first to put a switch under the PASM dial (choosing stills vs video vs S&Q), (I think it was the A7IV?), but it’s the first I owned - I like it, because:
  1. It simplifies the PASM dial (video and S&Q are not on PASM) - it is just P A S M 1 2 3 and the infamous green “newby” mode.
  2. It means we get 3 custom modes for each of stills, video, and S&Q
The A9 III has that, too. I’ll be genuinely surprised if it’s not on the A1 II.

The A9 III was the first with a * on the speed dial (top left) - it lets you control Hi+ vs Hi etc from menus. Honestly, I don’t use it because I am so accustomed to the dial (A9 II, A1, A9 III), but it could be nice to set my custom flash mode to single shot and my action mode to Hi. The * will probably be on the A1 II.

The perfect rear screen arrived on the A7RV, and it’s on the A9III. There will be much gnashing of teeth if it’s not on the A1 II.

The C5 button on the front of the body arrived on the A9III for “turbo mode” - overrides chosen speed to “Ludicrous Speed” (120gps on the A9III, although you choose lower) - I do not know if they will put it on the A1 II, but it is genuinely useful, even if you rarely use it. And you can redefine it like every other C-button - I can see someone using it for one of those “hold button for magic mode” setups. I suspect this will be on the A1 II, purely because it’s on the VG5 grip, and I expect the A1 II to use that grip.

Now as to the A9 III body shape - I like it. Slightly bigger grip, nice shape, and tilting the shutter button platform forward a bit. Suits me. Your opinion may be very different. The rumour said the A1 II will use this body, so I am happy.

The rumour also said CFexpressA V4 - happy happy joy joy 🥹. Means all your existing CFeA cards will work at full speed, and you can buy new ones that work faster - we don’t yet know how much faster the camera will go, but V4 goes to 1800Mb/s vs V2 at 800Mb/s (and SD topping out at 300…)

I suspect you’ll probably want CFeA cards in an A1 II, just as you do in an A9 III. They can still write to SD (and SD cards are good for installing firmware updates and saving configurations), but when you are shooting bursts…

I know it seems small and silly but this is a feature that I have been waiting for. To be able to select my memory setting and know what the frame rate will be. To quickly be able to switch setting for "bird in tree" with low frame rate to "bird in flight" with a high+ frame rate with one dial turn will be so nice. This will cut down on the number of photos taken by a very noticeable amount.

I'm sure the A1II is going to be excellent, but the rumors of it moving up in price are a bummer. Yeah, I would bet on $6999, any higher would really not make sense after checking Canon R1 and Nikon Z9 prices (both lower)

Are you in the market for the new camera Roger?

There is always some GAS present! lol. Not burning for one, happy with my A1 backed up by an A7CR, but always looking. Would love that AI AF to be in a high speed, hi res body. The A9III is tempting (pre capture, fast frame rate) but the 24MP isn't that attractive (I do crop frequently)

New photographs of the camera confirm most of the hypotheses about layout, assuming they are real. If they are Photoshopped, they started with an A9III ;)
  • Body matches the A9 III
  • Rear screen (A7RV)
  • C5 button on the front (A9 III)
  • Stills / Video / S&Q switch under mode dial (A7 IV)
  • Drive dial shows the * (A9 III)
Looks like the only surprises are going to be in the specs (40? 50? 60? fps for example), and in the firmware.

I want my surprises!
