Rumors Sigma 800mm f/6.3

This could attract a lot of attention after their very attractive 500mm f/5.6 released last year. Yes, it too is likely capped at 15fps, but it’s a really long lens with a good aperture…

@Tim Mayo - would you be tempted given you bought the 500?

I must admit I’m tempted, especially if the rumoured Sony 400-800mm is heavier than the 200-600.

If Sigma wanted to "revise" a lens from the past, I wish they'd do that with the 100-300 f/4 or the 120-300 f/2.8 ...

I would certainly be interested ,if under 5k ,but then quite a limiting user specific lens great for small birds and distant stuff at reserves ,but it needs to be under 3kg ,to be honest i would prefer a lens with a built in t/c just to get around sonys limitations ,imagine a 500mm sigma 5.6 with a built in t/c and 700mm f8 although i think the new sony 400-800mm is a little interesting also especially if it remains f6.3 at 600mm and as sharp as existing 200-600mm although not a comfortable lens either to carry around at 2.5 kg ,i would still want my 500mm 5.6 the image quality is first class and really light i can carry this lens when i am doing landscape on the of chance of opportunitys ,where as anything at 2.5kg just stays at home .

Honestly, I've all but ruled out the 400-800 on the basis of weight.

If Sigma could make the 800mm something under 2kg (hope!) I'd consider it, even with the 15fps limit (yeah, yeah, they have "eliminated the 15fps limit", but only where we don't care - being able to shoot 120fps with AF-S is useless to me).

I always have the A1 II on lossless compressed RAW, so my top speed is 20fps - 15fps isn't the end of the world, and 800mm is a lot of reach. I was a bit tempted by the 500mm, but I'm a lot tempted by 800mm.

The only reason I wouldn't be keen on an integral TC is that I'd have to carry the weight of it even when I don't want it. The idea that I can add it or subtract it without taking the lens off the camera is a big plus. Then again, once we are at 800mm, are we starting to reach the point where air turbulence / dirt in the air is a limiting factor?

I think the Sigma if it happen is of more interest to me , I wait to see reviews of the Sony 400-800 but it could be of little use to me given the f numbers and poor light here for much of the year
