Hello, I wonder if there's a chance Sony will release a firmware update for A7IV that lets it go 15fps on electronic shutter as well as go forward above 20 autofocus calculations per second (or so I think) I bought the A7IV because I read elsewhere it used the same A1 af system. Maybe I'm getting awful results because I use mechanical shutter. I love doing forward coming birds in flight and everytime i lock on a target the camera has near zero hit rate whether it's with the Sigma 70-200 FE OS or the G Master II 70-200
I'm too busy these upcoming weeks so I can't really try out, has somebody else ever achieved shots like those on MPWildlife and Trav in the Bush? (ig accounts, not mine)
Below is a shot I took of a mourning dove flying quite fast towards me, with the 70-200 DG DN OS Sports lens, after that the camera suddenly shifted focus from the bird to the background, it usually does it whenever something comes straight at it: it tries to catch up and aborts moving the XD motors back to reset position.

I don't think any of the manufacturers have increased any of the standard frame rate number after release and I won't expect that to happen. Though the A7iv does have the same AF system as the A1 it does lack the processing power that the A1 has, it is kind of like how the Cadillac CT5 has the same transmission as the Corvette C8. I would not expect the calculations to change either.

For that type of shooting I would use the 70-200 GMii over the Sigma because the Sony lens is a faster focusing lens. It is better that you use the mechanical shutter in the A7 lines for action photography because the readout speed is faster than the electronic, so you will be reducing rolling shutter.

I know it is frustrating that you are so close to getting the shots you want but just know that the A1 struggles with those types of shots unless they are like over 25 meters away.

then my camera is an autofocus beast.
Hint: I've never seen proper birds in flight with this kind of angle with an A7RV or an A6700. You made my day, the pigeon was barely 2 meters away from me haha! I don't have the G Master II but I've tested it once for 10 minutes and it really didn't seem like a huge leap forward from the sigma as long as photography goes. Yes it's much sharper but it's the kind of lens i would use on an A1 ii, due to pixel density.
