I hope it may be useful to any macro shooters.

It’s intended as a guide to take the guess work out of choosing step width and shot numbers when shooting using focus bracketing.

There are two files, the first needs printing at full size on A4 paper so the rectangles have the correct dimensions. This allows you to determine the magnification level at your chosen focus distance. The accompanying table provides the number of shots required at step widths 1 to 5. I’ve not included the larger step widths as the overlap in DOF for each shot is less than 50% and quality when stacked would be reduced. The table includes the data for each of the above aperture values and a stack depth from 5 to 20mm in 5mm steps. I think its fairly easy to figure out from the data sequences an approximate number of shots required for aperture steps in between those provided and for additional stack depths.

Some notes to consider.

The data used for depth of field calculations is for the lens are at each magnification and aperture.
The step with for each step setting is not published by Sony, the information on this is from testing and estimation.

Files are available here.

I’d be interested in any feedback from users putting it to practical test, I can fairly easily update it as required.
The table can be repeated for other lenses but i’d need to know what lenses and if there is any interest in having this information.

Angus.
