Lately in the San Francisco Bay Area, camera stores including mine were ransacked over night and $50,000 worth of cameras were stolen.
I was thinking, manufacturers should be able to protect cameras against theft and I am taking on a digital level.
Here is my idea: A digital code is copied on the memory card and if that card is not in the camera it is lights out. I could see this digital lock added with the next firmware update.
With expensive cameras with 2 slot, you can save the code on multiple cards and remove them, when you travel or leave it behind at home, hotels, etc.
It also would help those barely surviving camera stores.
I was thinking first of a fob, like cars have that needs to be added to the camera but it would have to be small and could get lost.

This idea in combination with a finger print scan or some code thing (option to use one or the other) to put the code on the card. You would also need to do something about blocking the 'return to factory settings'. Something else would have to be done to figure out issues with the secondary market stuff.

Your idea is better than those others about doing something each time the camera is turned on or having it linked to your phone all the time.

Sorry about your store.

Modern cameras could certainly feature more security features like you suggest, anything would be better than what we have now. Protecting lenses would be a little more difficult though.

Unfortunately most manufacturers probably don't care if your gear is stolen as they know you'll most likely go out and buy from them again with the insurance payout.

It's just like the lame security systems on most cars. I'm sure car manufacturers could make cars a lot more difficult to steal if they wanted to but they'd prefer you to buy a new one from them with the insurance payout.

What else are these lazy good for nothing people going to do with all of this gear?
They either know a lot of people who travel on the wrong side of the law, as it would be hard to get rid of all of the equipment they have stolen.
So far here in Australia this has not been a target for these lowlifes and I hope it is never.
I am sure if I seen a very pricey camera up for sale for so cheap I would know right away that it has been stolen.
We live in sad times I think.
