St. Peter's Basilica

I had the good fortune to be invited to a private tour of St.Peter's Basilica. It was a wonderful opportunity as normally there are hundreds of pilgrams and tourists visiting the Basilica and it is impossible to take in the splendor of the building and its works of art. There was also quite a bit of work going on as the Vatician prepared for the Jubilee Year of 2025. This is a three image pano.

How did you manage that? Just out of interest...

I was there in 1985. It would have been no where near as busy back then as it would be these days but still a very popular place for tourists in Rome.

Hi Richard, for the past 12 months I've been assisting the Italian National Fire Service on a project to prepare St.Peter's Basilica for the 2025 Jubilee. The project was concerned with improving the evacuation efficiency of the Basilica. As part of this project, I had the privilege of being invited last September to inspect progress on the work, and so we had the Basilica essentially to ourselves for an afternoon.

It was great to see the Christmas Day service on TV and some of my work being put to good use - the ramp leading to the 'Holy Door' that the Pope used to open the door on Christmas day,marking the start of the Jubilee year, was one of five ramps I had installed on the main entrances/exits to the Basilica. The image is a screen grab I took from the Christmas Day broadcast.
