I had a girlfriend who took a similar approach with a yacht's tiller, so I wouldn't call it unique. She claimed it left her hands free to coil rope, etc. then hinted that it also let her handle a cup of tea (a "subtle" hint I followed up on).

I must point out that she didn't handle the tiller that way when gybing, or even tacking. That would, I think, be uncomfortable at best!
