These are Eurasian Wigeons.

If you catch them on just the right (or wrong) angle, it looks like part of the head is missing, like the male on the left.

It's tough to make these birds look good, so I settled for an interesting composition.

Temp 8 deg. Did you have the hood installed? If so, that could be the reason for the softness you asked about in your thread.

Can't see the exif for your images?
I took those images on a different day, a much colder day than the one in question in my other post. The images posted in the non-BIF were taken on a tripod, and I am basically happy with them for first time use with new camera/lens.

The lens hood was on, yes. The images that were soft had temps of 56-ish outside. I had no idea that the lens hood at colder temps could do that! I know heat can. Do you know at what temps this can happen?

It's not so much at a given temp. There's actually a video about this somewhere in here, and you can find it on the net with a good keyword search. In a nutshell, if you pull warmer glass out of your bag in cold temps, the lens hood can protect the front elements from the cold and you end up with some minor fogging that's difficult to detect. Best to take the hood off and let everything acclimate.

Makes sense. Camera and lens were well acclimated though in the problematic images.
