Barred Owl - The silent flyer! They can pass by completely unnoticed as it flies. They are close to noiseless. Barred Owls are able to move at slower speeds without flapping, and the structure of their feathers acts as a silencer. They have comb-like serrations on their wing feathers that break up the air that creates the typical swoosh sound. Image taken in Central, Florida. The Launch of a Barred Owl - catching the launch is probably the most rewarding capture. In some species of birds it generally happens after they do a #2. My experience tells me with Owls that's not the case. It comes with holding the camera on them until that moment, often to the point of having to lower it and of course then they launch and you don't get the picture. Barred Owls-have a wingspan of 39 to 43 inches. Females are generally larger than males, although the difference is far more distinct when comparing their weights.
